Truck accident occurrences in California

California drivers are likely to see large trucks on city streets, local roads and on the state's highways. These trucks are busy shipping goods that will eventually make their way throughout the state and country. In particular, Los Angeles sees many trucks because of its close proximity to major shipping ports that bring goods in from around the world.

While seeing trucks is a frequent occurrence in California, so are truck accidents. According to the California Highway Patrol, there were 5,092 truck accidents that resulted in injuries in the state in 2012. That same year, 235 fatal truck accidents also occurred. Between 2008 and 2012, California saw 25,996 injury causing truck accidents. 2008 saw the most accidents with injuries -- 5,810 -- and 2009 saw the least -- 4,874 truck crashes with injuries.

The deadliest year was 2008 when 265 truck accidents -- as many as 30 in a particular month -- were fatal. 2010 was the least deadly year with only 214 fatal accidents. In 2009, 236 fatal accidents occurred, and in 2011, 245 truck accidents were fatal.

As this data shows, truck accidents are serious and common. The large size of these trucks usually lead to serious injuries-- broken bones, spinal cord injuries, head injuries and death are all common injuries in a truck collision.

People involved in these accidents need to make sure they understand their legal rights. An investigation can help to determine why the accident occurred. If the accident was the result of negligence on the part of the truck driver or the truck company, then those injured, or the family of those killed, may be entitled to compensation.
