Jury finds Los Angeles liable for death at dangerous intersection

Los Angeles has thousands of busy intersections, but not all of them are safe. A recent jury verdict in Los Angeles County Superior Court awarded a widow and her young son a $23.7 million verdict against the city because it failed to fix the known hazards of an intersection in San Pedro. The hazard -- limited visibility -- caused a motorcycle accident that resulted in the death of a Northrup Grumman employee.

Lawsuit alleges cop negligently fired at truck from helicopter

Helicopters are routinely used by police departments in the Los Angeles area to spot traffic violators and to aid in arrests. Helicopters can also be used for direct intervention in traffic incidents, although this can be very dangerous. A recent lawsuit filed against the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office alleges that a sheriff's deputy acted negligently when he fired nine shots at a driver heading the wrong way on the 215 Freeway last year and caused a serious car crash.

Big rig driver flees scene of fatal accident by unhitching cab

Fatal accidents involving big rig trucks are not uncommon in Los Angeles, but the truck usually stops at the scene or is disabled by the collision, making identification of the truck's driver and owner fairly easy to verify. A recent fatal collision in Vernon, however, involved a driver who was able to make a novel and temporarily successful escape from the scene of a fatal accident.
