We have all heard the saying “with freedom comes risk.” While the saying is often used in political discourse, it holds equally true for motorcycle enthusiasts. In exchange for the open road, motorcycle riders are exposed to unique dangers. The lack of a barrier between a rider and the road leaves riders particularly prone to serious injuries. To illustrate this point, two recent motorcycle accidents left three California residents dead on L.A. freeways.
The first fatal motorcycle crash took place on the Pomona Freeway in Hacienda Heights. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 30-year-old motorcyclist died when his motorcycle collided with a truck. Authorities have not yet stated the cause of the collision or whether any charges will be filed.
The second accident took place on the transition from the Long Beach Freeway to the San Bernardino Freeway in the Alhambra area. The California Highway Patrol reported that, as in the other accident, a man and a woman were killed when their motorcycle collided with another vehicle. The riders were reported to be in their 20s. The California Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the fatal motorcycle crash.
Motorcycle riders are 26 times more likely to die and 5 times more likely to be injured in a motor vehicle crash than someone in a passenger car. Due to the unique risks, it is vital that motorcycle riders protect their rights in the event that they are injured due to the negligence of others. Like most motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents are governed by the law of negligence. Establishing negligence can be complex, but a successful settlement or verdict can include medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
