The importance of drivers exercising the required standard of care when operating motor vehicles on the roadways perhaps cannot be emphasized enough. Often times when a driver does not exercise this reasonably required standard of care, it can lead to a car accident. Drivers may not realize that sometimes car accidents do not only impact the drivers that are involved. Some car accidents can cause serious injury to those that are in close proximity as well.
The scenario described above seems to be exactly what happened when a car accident recently occurred in Los Angeles. Four bystanders that were not at all involved in the occurrence of the accident suffered injuries as a result.
The accident occurred in the evening on a busy residential street. According to police, a driver operating a Ford Mustang was traveling at high speeds causing it to strike two other vehicles. The initial impact caused one of the cars to travel up onto the curb where four pedestrians were standing.
One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident while the other three were transported to a nearby hospital. The three survivors suffered serious injuries and one has been listed in critical condition; the other victims are in serious condition.
When individuals, such as the four involved in this case, are injured in a car accident, they may be able to recover compensation for their damages if a negligent driver caused those injuries. When a driver is negligently operating a motor vehicle and that leads to an accident, the liability for injuries lies with that negligent driver.
The injured parties may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit to recover costs and damages such as medical bills and lost wages. Surviving family members of the deceased victim may also be able to recover medical and funeral expenses, pain and suffering damages and some other types of damages by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent driver. The legal system strives to aid and protect victims and family members of victims in times of need following a car accident.
