When a motorcycle collides with a car, the occupants of the car usually fare better than the driver of the cycle. In a partial exception to this general rule, an especially violent motorcycle accident in Westwood left both the driver of the motorcycle and at least one passenger in critical condition.
The accident occurred when a sedan was attempting to make a left turn from Wilshire Boulevard onto Manning Avenue. According to photographs, the motorcycle appears to have hit the car in the right rear passenger door. The four occupants of the car and the cyclist were taken to nearby hospitals. The driver was released after treatment, but the other four victims remain hospitalized. The cyclist and one of the passengers are in critical condition.
Investigators are attempting to determine the speed of the motorcycle just before the collision. According to several witnesses, the cyclist was traveling at a very high rate of speed. One witness said that the cyclist was going so fast that he was probably unable to see oncoming traffic because of the rise of Wilshire Boulevard. Many questions remain to be answered regarding this accident and in determining the negligent party. As noted, the speed of the motorcycle is presently unknown. A second question was whether the cyclist had been drinking alcohol before the accident. Other questions involve the driver of the car: did he properly signal his turn, did he see the cyclist, was he distracted before the collision.
