Most media reports of traffic accidents end with the statement that police are still investigating the cause of the crash, and few specific details of the accident are reported. A recent collision in Van Nuys was caught on a security video camera, and police were able to provide what amounts to a play-by-play description of what became a multi-vehicle car accident.
A Hyundai Sonata was seen speeding north on Sepulveda Avenue. The officer who reported the contents of the video recording said that the driver was “flying” and that he appeared to be traveling at 100 miles per hour. A GMC Yukon Denali was turning left from Sepulveda into Vanowen Street when it was struck on the passenger door by the speeding Hyundai. The Denali was pushed 160 feet backwards on Sepulveda, and the Hyundai became airborne and was spinning wildly. It first hit a Toyota Corolla, slid across the top of a Prius and came to rest on the top of a Toyota Tacoma.
Including the driver of the Sonata, five persons were injured in the crash. The only person with serious injuries was the speeding driver, who was identified as Alex Wilright, a former collegiate track star who attempted to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in the 400-meter hurdles. The other four injured persons were hospitalized for medical treatment, but none of them suffered broken bones or internal injuries.
The police were obviously relieved that no one was killed in this accident, and the fact that four persons escaped without bone fractures or damaged internal organs probably added to their sense of relief. However, all four persons with injuries were hospitalized, and they may have suffered soft tissue injuries to their spines, concussions or other injuries that cannot be detected without the aid of an x-ray or MRI scan. Injuries of this type can have serious and long-lasting effects. Anyone who has suffered a soft-tissue injury or learns from an x-ray or MRI scan that they have suffered other injuries may wish to consult an attorney who specializes in auto accident cases. Such a consultation can provide an analysis of the case and an evaluation of the likelihood of recovering damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering.
