Drunk driver flees police, crashes and injures 10

On Behalf of | Aug 5, 2016 | Car Accidents

Most Californians probably think of a violation of the state’s drunk driving laws in terms of suspended drivers’ licenses, fines and jail terms; however, they may not understand the threat posed by drunk drivers to others. A recent car accident in West Covina demonstrates the extent in which a drunk driver can cause injury to many people, including the drunk driver himself.

The accident sequence began when police in West Covina saw an Acura traveling in excess of the posted speed limit. When the Acura failed to brake for a stop sign, police tried to pull over the driver. The driver supposedly refused to stop, attempting to flee the police. According to the California Highway Patrol, the Acura was traveling west on Francisquito Avenue when it ran a stop sign and struck a Nissan Maxima traveling north on a cross street. The Nissan spun out of control and struck a Ford Expedition traveling south on the same street.

As a result of these collisions, the driver of the Acura was injured. Also injured were the driver of the Nissan and her two daughters. The driver and five passengers in the Ford Expedition were also hurt. The driver of the Acura was still hospitalized for his injuries when he was charged with numerous traffic and DUI offenses, including causing serious bodily injury while fleeing a police officer’s vehicle.

Anyone who has been injured or lost a loved one in an auto accident caused by a drunk driver may wish to understand the legal recourses available to him or her. An experienced attorney can provide a helpful overview of the facts of the case. A personal injury claim could help victim recover damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering.
