The numerous freeways in the Los Angeles area are frequently the scene of violent and destructive auto accidents. Occasionally, however, the winding roads in the mountains that ring the Los Angeles basin can also become the scene of serious accidents. A recent three-car accident on La Tuna Canyon Road provides a sad reminder of the consequences of poor judgment mixed with high speed.
The scenario of the accident was common. One car attempted to pass another at a high speed and struck a third car heading in the opposite direction. Police officers described the head-on collision as “extremely violent” and surmised that both vehicles were traveling at a high speed at the time of the crash. One witness told police that the collision “looked like an explosion.” One car was “almost flying.”
Two persons were pronounced dead at the scene, and six were injured. Of the four persons who were injured, four were hospitalized in critical condition. Initial reports of the accident did not state whether any of the three drivers was among the fatalities. Police closed La Tuna Canyon Road while they completed their investigation of the accident.
