Two pedestrians killed in Echo Park crash; cause unknown

Two pedestrians died when they were struck by a car at an intersection in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Despite the relatively straightforward nature of the crash, police are still searching for precise answers to important “why” and “what” questions about the fatal accident.

The crash occurred at about 9:00 a.m. at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Rosemont Avenue. According to police, the car sheared off a fire hydrant and smashed into a light pole. Fire department officials said that the car struck and killed two women and injured a third. The driver of the vehicle was trapped in the car until he was extracted by rescuers. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police said that they were unable to offer any conclusions about whether speed or alcohol played a role in the accident. No arrests have been made, and the police are continuing their investigation. Two blocks were closed to traffic as about a dozen officers searched the crash scene for evidence that might shed light on the answers to these two questions. Also unknown at the present time is whether the women were standing on the sidewalk or were struck while they were in the crosswalk.

The families of the two women who were killed will have claims for wrongful death against the driver. The injured woman, assuming that she survives her injuries, will have a claim for personal injury. The exact nature of these claims must await a complete investigation by the police and by any private investigators retained by the families or their attorneys. Anyone who has lost a loved one or suffered injuries in similar circumstances may wish to consult an attorney who specializes in automobile accident cases for an evaluation of the case and an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages.
