Young boy dies after car crashes into apartment

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2016 | Car Accidents

Bedrooms are usually regarded as sanctuaries that provide safety and comfort from the outside world. A recent car accident in South Los Angeles shows how even a bedroom cannot provide complete safety.

When police arrived at the scene of the accident just after midnight, they found that a car driven by a 24-year-old woman had crashed into the bedroom of a ground floor apartment. In the bedroom they found a mother, father and their five-year-old son pinned underneath the car. Two girls, ages 12 and 6, were also in the room. All five were taken to a nearby hospital. The little boy died from his injuries after he reached the hospital.

The initial investigation showed that the father had jumped in front of his son to protect him when the car smashed into the apartment. The driver said that another vehicle had cut her off, causing her to swerve and crash into the building. The woman was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police were searching for a 1995-99 vehicle that was described by the driver.

The accident has an especially tragic footnote. Police found a letter on top of a pile of rubble in the bedroom. The letter was apparently written by the five-year-old; he was asking Santa for a bicycle for Christmas.

Many facts about the accident are unknown. The speed of the car that crashed into the building is unknown. Whether another vehicle was involved is another crucial question. Whether the driver was in fact intoxicated must also be resolved before liability can be determined. Anyone who has been injured or lost a loved one in an accident with a number of unanswered questions may wish to consult a lawyer who specializes in auto accident cases. Such a consultation can provide a helpful analysis of the known facts and questions that must be answered. An experienced attorney can also provide an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering.
