The recent popularity of so-called gig taxi services in Los Angeles and elsewhere has raised many concerns about their safety. Many of the drivers lack formal training, and their driving skills are often untested before they are hired. While states are debating imposing regulations on these businesses, accidents involving these services are injuring people and taking lives. A recent two-car accident in South Los Angeles has apparently killed an Uber driver and injured the passenger.
According to the police, the collision occurred at about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. One vehicle was headed north on Arlington, and it struck another car traveling west on King Boulevard. The latter vehicle was carrying a passenger. The driver was described by one TV outlet as “probably” an Uber driver. The driver of this car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other car allegedly fled the scene and has not been apprehended. The supposed-Uber automobile carried a passenger who was seriously injured in the collision; the injured man was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police have not completed their investigation of the accident. No cause for the collision has been identified. The driver who left the scene has, in all likelihood, committed a felony by doing so, but police have not released a description of any conduct that may have caused the accident.
People who have been injured or lost loved ones in hit and run accidents often face a daunting task. Anyone in such a situation may wish to consult a lawyer who handles auto accident cases. Such a consultation can provide a helpful evaluation of the case and an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages for medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering.
