A motorcyclist who was well known in his community died following a crash in North Hollywood. The crash involved the motorcyclist’s striking a vehicle that had turned left in front of the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
Los Angeles police said that they are continuing to investigate but that, at this time, there is no reason to believe this was anything other than accident. The driver of the pickup truck that turned in to the path of the motorcyclist remained on hand and cooperated with the police when they arrived at the scene.
Officers did not say whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident but did indicate they had made no arrests.
Family members and close friends reported that they had managed to raise $8,000 to offset anticipated funeral expenses.
Sadly, cars making left turns in front of motorcycles are a fairly common cause of serious motorcycle accidents. While this particular crash remains under investigation, drivers who are trying to turn left frequently miss the fact that a motorcycle is approaching from the opposite direction.
In other cases, a driver may misjudge the speed of an oncoming motorcyclist and inadvertently cut the path of the motorcycle off, leaving the motorcyclist with little chance of escaping an injury.
Even if they are not caused intentionally, such accidents are preventable. Drivers of passenger vehicles need to train themselves to spot motorcyclists by paying careful attention, particularly at intersections or when making a left turn.
Moreover, drivers also need to be aware of the differences between motorcycles and cars. For instance, given their size, it can be very hard to judge the speed of an oncoming motorcycle accurately.
