Do people think tailgating is safe?

On Behalf of | Apr 24, 2024 | Car Accidents

If you’re in a vehicle that is being tailgated, it’s often very obvious to you that it is unsafe. You feel like the driver behind you is always just a second or two away from causing an accident. It can be very stressful, and this is why the best advice is usually to try to get the tailgater to pass your vehicle. Just get them to go around you so that you keep yourself safe.

But you may find yourself wondering why people even drive this way in the first place. Do they honestly think it’s safe?

People don’t understand reaction times

There are some cases in which drivers are angry or frustrated, so they intentionally act in an unsafe manner. If it’s road rage, for example, the tailgater probably doesn’t believe what they’re doing is safe. They are just letting their emotions control their actions, rather than controlling their emotions themselves.

But in many cases, tailgaters will just be oblivious and they won’t understand that they are too close to your vehicle. Often, they don’t know that it takes 1.5 seconds to react before the car even starts slowing down. That’s just the time it takes to recognize the need to slow down and then push the brake pedal. So a driver will think they have plenty of space, but they realistically only have two seconds – and they learn that isn’t enough as they cause an accident.

Have you suffered injuries?

If you’ve been injured in an accident caused by a tailgater, you may deserve compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other related costs. Take the time to look into all of the legal options at your disposal.
