Human error and car accidents: A clear link

On Behalf of | Sep 10, 2025 | Car Accidents

Technically speaking, there are things other than human error that can lead to car accidents. One example could be poor road design, while another could be dangerous weather conditions. In some cases, there will be a vehicle malfunction, such as the brakes giving out on a semi-truck, leading to a crash.

But in more than 90% of cases, human error is the reason for car accidents. There is a very clear link between mistakes that drivers make and serious crashes, and the drivers who have made these negligent errors may be responsible for costs like medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and much more.

What qualifies as a human error?

Part of the reason why you can connect over 90% of accidents to human error is that there are many different examples of driving mistakes that people make. Some examples include:

  • Running a stop sign
  • Merging without a blinker
  • Texting and driving
  • Following too closely or tailgating
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Driving the wrong way down the interstate
  • Making aggressive passes or driving recklessly

In fact, even some of the issues noted above, such as a vehicle malfunction, could be linked to human error. For instance, perhaps a truck driver was supposed to perform routine maintenance on their vehicle and keep it in good driving condition, but they neglected to do so. This lack of maintenance then caused the brakes to fail, leading to an accident. It is not so much a malfunction as it is a product of the driver’s inattention to maintaining their equipment and ensuring that they are safe on the road.

If you have been injured in a car accident caused by another driver, it is crucial that you know how to seek financial compensation.
