No matter how minor a car crash may be, being in a traffic collision is a scary thing to experience. Aside from the mental trauma that it causes the victims, there are also a wide range of injuries that can bring forth temporary disabilities or permanent, life-changing disabilities.
Skull fractures
When a car accident victim experiences a significant blow or direct impact to their head, it can cause damage to their skull, blood vessels and/or brain. This is a serious type of head injury that may lead to traumatic brain injury (TBI).
While a linear fracture is medically known as a simple skull fracture that can heal without treatment, the more severe types of skull fractures (e.g., depressed fracture) can involve multiple cracks on the victim’s skull that pushes a part of their bone to the brain.
When this happens, the bone pieces inside their head can cause their body to develop a secondary bacterial infection known as ‘septic meningitis’ — putting them at high risk for brain damage or death.
Diffuse axonal injury (DAI)
Known as one of the most catastrophic forms of TBIs, a DAI occurs when a crash victim’s head is shaken from a sudden acceleration, causing their brain to rotate within their skull. This rapid movement then causes their brain’s nerve fibers to stretch and tear, disturbing its normal functions on a cellular level.
When this happens, it can interrupt their brain’s signal transmission, leading to loss of consciousness and/or coma. Even after recovery, many DAI survivors often deal with long-term health issues such as chronic fatigue, emotional instability and cognitive impairments.
When a brain injury alters a person’s life, they need to be compensated for their intangible losses
You should not suffer long-term because of someone else’s mistake on the road. If you are a crash survivor who is experiencing a psychological impact because of your brain injury, it is crucial for you to contact a lawyer who can help you seek the justice that you deserve.
