Seven-year-old recovers $1.2 million for dad's death

In 2010, a car driven by a Los Angeles county deputy sheriff struck and killed a man standing on the side of a freeway after a minor collision. In the first trial of the case, the jury returned a verdict of $280,500 as damages for the death of the girl's father. The girl's attorneys appealed the verdict and secured an order for a new trial.

Big rig crash kills 1, injures 3

California motorists are usually aware of the proximity of one or more large semi-trailer trucks as they travel on the state's highways, but occasionally, even the highest degree of awareness cannot prevent a tragic accident. A recent tractor-trailer accident near Livermore illustrates the point.

How safe is lane-splitting?

This blog has reported on motorcycle collisions involving lane-splitting and on legislative efforts in California to clarify the legality of this practice. We have not directly attempted to answer the question that often occurs to non-motorcyclists, "Are lane-splitters courting disaster?" A recent study at the University of California - Berkeley has provided some interesting and occasionally surprising answers. The study was conducted by the Safe Transportation Research & Education Center ("SafeTREC"). The study examined 5,969 motorcycle accidents that occurred between June 2012 and August 2013 using data derived from the California Enhanced Motorcycle Data Project in collaboration with the California Highway Patrol.

Spinal cord injuries: causes and symptoms

In Californian and elsewhere, motor vehicle and motorcycle accidents are the most common cause of spinal cord injuries, causing more than 35 percent of new spinal cord injuries each year. Alcohol use is a factor in about 25 percent of such injuries. The effect of such an injury on a person's life can be catastrophic, impairing or eliminating the ability to walk, hold dinner utensils or take a bath or shower without assistance. Moreover, injuries involving damage to the spinal cord are permanent - the victim will never recover.
