Traffic congestion is aggravating, but most people at least feel a bit safer when they are driving at a slow speed in bumper-to-bumper traffic. However, as a multiple vehicle truck accident near Hollister, CA recently demonstrated, even this comfort can be illusory.
During a recent Monday afternoon rush hour, traffic on Highway 25 south of Hollister had slowed from a slow crawl to a dead stop. Unfortunately, the driver of a big rig hauling produce failed to stop. The truck slammed into the rear of a Ford 150 pick-up truck, and the big rig driver then lost control of his vehicle. The semi-trailer truck then smashed into a Honda Accord, killing the driver, and also hit four more vehicles. In all, nine persons were injured and five were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries. Highway 25 was closed for eight hours after the accident occurred.
The California Highway Patrol initially blamed the driver of the truck for causing the accident, but drugs and alcohol were ruled out as having anything to do with the accident. CHP officials are still investigating why the big rig driver failed to stop.
