Overturned logging truck kills one motorcyclist, injures another

As residents of California are aware, state roadways can be quite busy at times. Therefore, it may be easier to driver a smaller vehicle in order to get places. However, busy streets mean that there will be a wide variety of other vehicles traveling the roadway and some of them may be hauling commercial loads. These types of vehicles are no match for a motorcycle and it is essential that both the motorcyclist and the truck driver exercise the utmost care in order to avoid a truck accident.

Unfortunately, these types of tragic accidents still occur and, when they do, often cause serious injuries and sometimes even death. An accident that recently occurred in California involved a log trucker and four motorcycles. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred shortly before noon on Highway 3, not far from the Fawn Group Campground.

There were four motorcyclists traveling northbound and a large commercial truck carrying logs driving southbound. The truck driver tried to take a sharp curve and was not able to control the vehicle, which caused the vehicle to flip over onto its side. After the vehicle turned over, the load of logs came loose and fell into the path of the motorcyclists.

One of the motorcyclists was unable to avoid the logs that were coming in her direction. She collided with the logs and ultimately became pinned underneath them. According to the CHP, she had to be extricated from underneath the logs by fire personnel who responded to the scene of the accident. This 48-year-old woman suffered tragic fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

One of the other motorcyclists swerved to avoid the logs and lost control of his bike, causing it to flip over. He also suffered injuries, but they were, thankfully, only moderate in nature. The other two motorcyclists were not harmed as a result of the collision. The truck driver suffered a laceration to his head, but refused medical attention beyond what he received at the scene of the accident.

Large logs and a big commercial truck are no match for a motorcycle, which provides far less protection than passenger vehicles and other vehicles that are traveling the roads of California. If a motorcyclist is injured by another’s negligence, then it is important that the negligent party is held responsible. A negligence action also can help the injured motorcyclist and his or her loved ones by providing the appropriate compensation for recovery.
