California helmet laws: Preventing serious injuries

On Behalf of | Sep 28, 2023 | Motorcycle Accidents

Riding a motorcycle allows you to enjoy amazing views of the ocean, forests and all the state offers. However, it does come with inherent dangers.

These dangers are increased significantly if you don’t wear a helmet. Helmets help to reduce the risk of traumatic brain injuries, which can be life-threatening if an accident occurs.

Legal requirements for helmets in California

According to California Vehicle Code Section 27803, it is mandatory for all motorcycle riders and passengers to wear a helmet that meets the U.S. Department of Transportation’s safety standards when they are on public roads. Additionally, the state enforces a compulsory helmet law for bicyclists under 18. This law was created to help protect the most vulnerable riders.

The science behind the safety

Research has repeatedly shown the effectiveness of helmets in preventing severe injuries. Helmets act as a barrier, absorbing a significant portion of the impact during a collision. This absorption decreases the force that would otherwise be transmitted directly to the skull and brain. It is important to ensure you purchase an approved helmet to get the full protection it offers.

Wear a helmet to protect yourself and follow the law

Wearing a helmet each time you get on the road is necessary. Failure to do so may jeopardize your life if you are involved in an accident. It may also result in other serious injuries like paralysis.

You have options if you are involved in a motorcycle accident caused by another person’s negligence. Knowing your legal rights is essential in this situation.
